There are many activities available, but as I'm in Costa Rica the one thing I really really want to do is see more Costa Rican wildlife.
Stuart and I sign up for another boat trip, this time with a covered roof, just in case. Fortunately the weather has turned and it is a bright balmy day. Still not clear enough to get a view of the Arenal Volcano, but we discover that it is only visible 8% of the time.
We have a two hour minibus trip to get to the river, and I begin to wonder if we have made the right choice. Half way to our destination we stop at iguana cafe, and find some surprisingly convenient iguanas right outside.
Fortunately, we have a great guide on the trip and we float very slowly down the river as he seems to spot something every 10 metres. We see many many caiman because they have all come out to sun themselves after a few rainy days. The guide says they usually see 5 or 6, I think we must see 50 or 60.
We see many species of birds, a sloth (too far away to photograph) lots of very noisy howler monkeys and the absolute highlight, a troop of capuchin monkeys. These monkeys are normally very shy, but they are so busy playing and tucking into some fruit that they don't seem to notice us.
We spend about 20 minutes watching them playing and eating. I am thoroughly enchanted by their antics.
On our return to the hotel we rejoin the group for a very pleasant trip to the hot springs.
